Shop More Coffee

Gertrude Stein once wrote, “A rose is a rose is a rose.” That may be true for roses, but coffee beans ain’t roses.

Unlike beans used in most packaged coffees, specialty coffee beans are hand-picked and hand processed. That’s certainly a major differentiator in the world of coffee, but there’s an even more important one. Specialty coffee costs a little more because buyers who import specialty coffee pay a premium price to the farmers who grow and harvest the beans. It gives our farmer partners an opportunity to make a better life for themselves and their families’ futures. Every single roaster featured in the Nomi Brew store only roasts specialty coffee. We are committed to making a game-changing difference in the lives our farmer partners.

Meet Jill Killen, Owner of Cloud City Coffee Roasting Co.

The road to success in the coffee trade is never a straight line. As someone who has been through a few twists and turns along the way, Jill created her own singular path. After a few years in the technology sector, Jill, along with a business partner, started a small café. She liked the people part of it—the customers mostly—and found fulfillment in the coffee she started roasting on the side to serve in the café. The coffee became popular by word of mouth in Seattle—no small feat in that town—and her passion for roasting coffee heated up. Accolades began pouring in when she was recognized for excellence by the Good Food Foundation for an extraordinary Ethiopian light roast. That led to being a featured guest on the popular podcast, “Keys to the Shop”. Nomi Brew thinks she’s ready for her close-up, Mr. DeMille.

Career Highlights of a Coffee Tastemeister

On Beginnings

“Like most kids in military families, I got used to moving around a lot. So putting down roots wasn’t a high priority until I found my way to the great Northwest. Seattle has so much diversity—not just the people and lifestyles—but geography and food and drink….pretty much everything. It feels like home to me.”

On Exploring Origin

As I learned more about different coffees from diverse points of origin, I felt the need to put my feet down firmly on the farms in those countries. I want to soak up as much knowledge as possible wherever I go. Right now, I would say my two favorite points of origin are El Salvador and Uganda. El Salvador holds a special place in my heart, not only because it was my first point of origin visit, but also due to the cherished friendships I formed with the Pacas family. Similarly, Uganda has captivated me with its incredible people, leaving a lasting impression.”

On Cloud City Coffee Roasting Co.

“We focus on light roasts, bright roasts…and the occasional medium roast. The main reason why is because many coffee lovers, including me, don’t believe there are enough great choices out there in the light roast niche. I feel it’s an underserved market.”
