We are the anti-pod coffee company.
Strong language, you say?

It’s high time somebody put a stake in the grounds.

Globally, more than 9.8 billion plastic, non-biodegradable coffee pods, each taking up to 500 years to break down, are produced every year.

Coffee grounds and aluminum are not recyclable. After each serving, the foil and contents must be completely removed. Taking a few extra seconds to clean each pod should be easy, but let’s be honest. It’s likely that the majority of people will still toss the empty cups in the trash, or neglect to correctly clean them. Chances are that most plastic pods are still destined for the landfill.

Even the inventor of Keurig and K-Cups, John Sylvan, stated he regrets creating them.

In 1997, he sold all his shares of Keurig. Keurig claims on their site “By the end of 2020, 100% of our K-Cup® pods will be recyclable“ by using a BPA-free polypropylene (#5 plastic). But even #5 plastics have their own issues.

Pods may contain hormone-disrupting chemicals.

Another reason why you shouldn’t buy plastic coffee pods is how bad they are for our health. As the plastic heats up, some of those chemicals get in the coffee grounds for your “freshly” brewed cup of coffee. BPA, BPF, and BPS are all chemicals found in plastic. All of these chemicals can affect our hormones and fertility. The top part of the coffee pod structure is made from aluminum which can also be harmful to our bodies when exposed to high heat and acids like coffee. Prolonged exposure to aluminum may cause some problems in your brain. It has been linked to depression, Alzheimer’s, anxiety, and autoimmune diseases. While oral exposure is not usually a problem, if ingested at high levels it can cause problems.

Love Planet Earth. Leave Plastic Pods. - Nomi Brew
Give Up Coffee Pod Guilt. Be Happy. Nomi Brew

Nomi believes in educating and elevating the industry.

By offering pillars of education in coffee agriculture, science, and business.

By developing new financial micro-programs to aid growth with decent, low-cost loans for farmers.

By educating American coffee lovers about what’s wrong with the present business model, and how to create a better, more sustainable future for all in perpetuity.

What’s all this fuss about sustainability?

The official definition of Sustainable Development is the idea that human societies must live and meet their needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.*

Nomi says, “Pay it forward.” Sustainability encourages people, politicians, and businesses to make decisions betting on the long term and taking future generations into account. In this way, acting sustainably encompasses a temporal framework of decades (instead of a few months or years) and considers more than the profit or loss involved in the short run.

*Definition first appeared in the Brundtland Report (aka Our Common Future), 1987.

Our packaging meets a higher standard.

100% Compostable. You can’t get higher than that.

Nomi Brew is presently in talks with the National Renewable Energy Laboratory and the CTO BOTTLE Consortium ( about plastics and their environmental impact to better understand how plastic recycling can be improved.

Nomi Brew is all about clean beans and clean consciences.

We build long-term relationships with our coffee producers. These relationships are based on a model of coffee trading where roasters and producers work together to establish a long-term trading partnership that insulates both partners against the fluctuations of international commodities markets. We pay higher prices tied to quality, not the commodity market. The trading process is transparent; farmers gain bargaining power through knowledge and receive a fair living wage.

It’s the end of the plastic pod as we know it. (Our apologies to R.E.M.)

Nomi Brew’s mission is to eliminate plastic pods by 2035
