Why Nomi Brew Won’t Ever Sell Coffee Pods

If you’ve developed a coffee pod habit, you’re not alone. These single-use pods have been on the rise over the last decade and continue to be more popular than ever. They’re convenient, easy to use, and require little effort to bring you your much-needed morning coffee. But does that cup of Joe come with a side of guilt over what it may be costing you? At Nomi, we call this “Pod Guilt.”

It turns out those pods are bad for you, bad for the environment, and bad for your bank account. Is all of that worth the potential convenience of these coffee pod machines? In fact, that’s why we at Nomi Brew made our company mission statement: “To eliminate plastic pods by 2035.” Free yourself from pod guilt and come join the anti-pod revolution with us!

Give Up Coffee Pod Guilt. Be Happy. Nomi BrewThey’re Poison For The Environment

Let’s start with the biggest concern: the environment. A lot of coffee pods like K-Cups are made of mostly non-recyclable plastic and are not biodegradable. And the adhesive used to secure the foil seal on the pods makes it almost impossible to remove from the plastic. That means most of these pods are going to end up in landfills rather than be recycled. And these bad boys can take up to 500 years to break down.

While producers of coffee pods like Keurig and Nespresso have made strides in creating more recyclable pods in recent years, following through on this requires more work from the consumer than simply throwing the used pod into the recycling bin after use. Thanks to the complex packaging of pods like K-Cups, recycling them is not always as easy as these companies claim. Even Nespresso’s 100% aluminum recyclable pods require that you either take them to your local Nespresso store – if you happen to live near one – or drop them off at a UPS store for recycling.

They’re Bad For Your Health

Not only are pods bad for the environment, but they can also be harmful to your health. As we’ve noted, these pods are mostly made of plastic. We’ve all heard about the potential health risks posed by toxic chemicals in plastics. And as that plastic heats up, there’s a good chance those chemicals are seeping through and mixing with those freshly ground coffee beans. These chemicals could put you at risk for everything from weight gain to fertility issues. And while companies like Keurig claim to use their own special blend of plastic that is BPA-Free, many won’t disclose to the public what’s used in their plastic formula.

In addition to concerns about the plastic contents of these pods, the coffee pod machines are difficult to clean. That puts them at an increased risk of developing mold. Once they’re filled with water, the machine’s internal tank can’t be drained, creating the perfect environment for growing mold, mildew, and algae. Gross, right? No one wants a side of mold with their morning coffee.

They’re Bad For Your Bank Account

On top of being bad for humans and for the earth, choosing to use coffee pods also comes with considerable financial costs to coffee enthusiasts like us. Not only are pod machines expensive — the average Keurig coffee maker, for example, starts at $60 and can run up to about $200 for a top-of-the-line model — those single-brew pods add up, too.

In fact, you might be surprised to learn that The New York Times calculated that K-Cup coffee costs roughly $50 per pound. Look at it this way, if you drink a cup of coffee a day, that adds up to $400 a year! And that number is the same whether you’re drinking the good stuff or the lower quality, commercial-grade coffee pods. Even your fanciest bag of specialty-grade coffee wouldn’t cost you anywhere near that amount.

Luckily, you don’t need a snazzy pod machine to enjoy a delicious cup of Joe.
